Hop On The Bus, Gus -- Get Yourself Free

Of all 36 ways to get out of trouble, the best way is -- leave. - Chinese Proverb

I have recently had discussions with folks fed up with where they lived - and they were afraid.

I have quoted them one piece of wisdom - regardless of what country they lived in.

A country will always treat tourists better than citizens.

If you are increasingly uncomfortable as a citizen -- leave.

Keep your money or business in a safe and low tax country, keep your citizenship in a country that values freedom, keep yourself a PT -- perpetual tourist.

(As an example ; America and the UK are offshore tax havens to the world - except their own citizens.)

If you live in a country that believes you are its property - just because you were born there - find some place that will let you own yourself.

From the Simon and Garfunkel song, 50 ways to leave your lover:

just slip out the back,Jack
make a new plan,Stan
don't need to be coy,Roy
just listen to me
hop on the bus,Gus
don't need to discuss much
just drop off the key,Lee
and get yourself free.

If you are staying for a few special benefits - count their true cost. Cattle feeding at a government trough must expect to be herded, penned, branded, milked, and/or slaughtered.

I can't help but believe a lean elk wandering free is more fulfilled than a calf being fattened in a stall.

You may have to walk out of the slaughter house - but it can be your life.

Excellent post! I am fed up with where I live, and my goal is to get out of here. Some people make it sound like it's so easy to leave, but it's not. So, I have a plan in place to be out of here in a few years, and I will not have to worry about money. Thanks for the great post, and it's great to be reminded again that we have our own destiny in our hands.

Rob,

Congratulations, and thanks for the comment.

So many are tied by a guilt trip to what is an unequal commitment.

Enjoy your life.

I am surprised by your assertion that "A country will always treat tourists better than citizens." I think of Mexican "illegal aliens" and other foreigners visiting this (or any) country. Xenophobia is a word because immigrants are often discriminated against. I suspect there is more behind your statement that I am not seeing; what am I missing? (In other words, how do we insure we become one of the respected tourists instead of the hated aliens?)

A good question.

Your point is well taken, there is a great deal of disruption between Guatemala and Mexico right now at their border - illegals sneaking into Mexico.

If you wait until times are bad - emotions will be high. You might even get stuck in a war zone.

Xenophobia is most often a result of propaganda, a national issue created to unite followers behind a leader. In the US this is more applicable to Arabs than Mexicans. It is still not as bad as it may become. This can last for generations - it would not be wise to move into its path.

Choose your destination instead from the entire world - someplace that may be a much better match to your desires and needs than where you are. Make your choice and start your preparations before troubled times.

There is an old saying - an expert is just a know-it-all from out of town. A college degree from another area or country may carry more clout. An accent can be seen as charming - as long as it is from far enough away.

Even at that, Mexicans entering the USA are doing it by rational choice - to improve their lives. From their view they chose the USA because it is better than what they had.

They willingly pay the price to enter. They know what they will encounter - and they choose it.

Study your many options and Plan ahead.

Best to ya
